Gary Johnson, the former two-term New Mexico governor and Libertarian Party presidential candidate, is the new CEO and president of Cannabis Sativa, a Nevada-based startup. The company made the announcement on Tuesday, and plans to begin selling medical and recreational marijuana products.

Johnson said he wants to expand Cannabis Sativa into a major marijuana business and develop products that are legal in states like Colorado and Washington. Besides equity in the company, the former governor will receive a symbolic US$1 annual salary.

The company will make marijuana-based oils aimed at helping children with epilepsy and cough drop-like products for recreational use. Cannabis Sativa also announced on Tuesday that it has named 1998 Libertarian Party candidate Steve Kubby as its chairman.

Johnson added that Cannabis Sativa is working to determine their limitations under federal law, which conflicts with recent Colorado and Washington state legislation and still treats marijuana as a controlled substance.

“I think in 10 years, for the most part, the United States will legalize marijuana,” Johnson said. “And what the United States does, so does the world.”
