Guatemala Surpasses Costa Rica, Opens Central America’s Largest Solar Plant

EspañolOn Wednesday, Guatemala inaugurated its first solar power generation plant and the largest one in Central America, with capacity to produce 50 kilowatts of electricity and benefit 24,000 households.

The project, backed by companies Gran Solar (Spain), Grupo Green (Guatemala), and the Swiss investment fund Ecosolar, cost US$14 million and outperforms Costa Rica’s power plant by four kilowatts.

Guatemalan President Otto Pérez Molina participated in its inauguration and said when the plant is at full capacity, the country will cease to consume 50,000 gallons of bunker fuel for electricity generation.

“We are shifting toward renewable energies, and the government is willing to continue to promote these projects that are friendly to the environment,” he said.
