Venezuela: UNASUR Representatives Cancel Visit to Renew Peace Talks

Espa├▒olThe foreign ministers of Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador canceled their trips to Caracas on Thursday, where their presence was expected to help renew relations between Nicol├ís Maduro’s government and the opposition. The representatives did not give reasons for the sudden announcement and postponed the visit for a date yet to be determined.

“So much has happened since the foreign ministers announced their visit, that they may have felt they needed more time to evaluate the events,” speculated a BBC correspondent in Venezuela, Arturo Wallace.

Earlier this week the Venezuelan opposition, united in the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD), announced the suspension of meetings with the government, citing Maduro’s broken promises and arrests of hundreds of students and activists. The arrival of UNASUR delegates would have resumed peace talks, but for now they will have to wait.

The negotiation meetings launched on April 10 aim to find a solution to months of street protests against the government of Nicolás Maduro, which have left at least 41 dead and nearly 3,000 arrested.
