María Corina Machado Takes Her Message to Canada

By: PanAm Post Staff - May 7, 2014, 10:25 am

EspañolMaría Corina Machado arrived in Canada on Wednesday to meet with representatives of the Committees on Foreign Affairs and Human Rights as part of her international tour of parliaments around the world to present her views on the reality of Venezuela’s political situation.

The Facebook page of the Venezuelan Democratic Forum in Canada announced that Machado will meet with members of the Canadian Parliament on both Wednesday and Thursday. They also noted that the representative of the Venezuelan opposition, whom they regard as “the ambassador and voice of Venezuelans to the world,” will meet with Venezuelans living in Toronto and Ottawa.

Since Hugo Chávez was elected president of Venezuela, Canada has held a critical position on the situation in the Latin-American country. This year alone the Canadian government has issued four press releases condemning the violence and strong repressive measures of the Venezuelan government toward demonstrators. In late February, the Canadian Parliament passed a motion demanding the protection of democratic freedoms and human rights of Venezuelan citizens.

So far this year, members of the Canadian parliament, such as Paul Dewar of the New Democratic Party and Marc Garneau of the Liberal Party, have met several times with members of the Venezuelan community to discuss recent developments in the Latin-American country.
