Russian Foreign Minister Visits Cuba, Tours Latin America
EspañolCuba’s state news agency, AIN, has reported Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Cuban President Raul Castro met on Tuesday in Havana to review bilateral relations and cooperation accords. This is Lavrov’s first stop in a tour of Latin-American countries to seek support for Russia’s actions in international affairs, most notably the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
The tour also takes the Russian foreign minister to Nicaragua, Peru, and Chile in the following days. His last visit to Cuba, considered a strategic partner by the Russian government, was in February 2010. Russia has been boosting investments in key sectors of the island’s economy ever since.
In a press conference at the Cuban Foreign Ministry, Lavrov reinforced the idea of a “brotherhood” between Havana and Moscow, and thanked the regime for its support with the situation in Ukraine.
