Ex-Guatemalan Soldier Sentenced to 10 Years in US Prison
Former Guatemalan soldier Jorge Vinicio Sosa Orantes, 55, has been stripped of his US citizenship and sentenced to 10 years in prison by a US court for his role in a 1982 massacre.
Sosa was a soldier in Guatemala during its 36-year civil war. He was a member of an elite unit called the Kaibiles, which stormed a village where residents were thought to be supporting or harboring left-wing guerrillas. Over three days, the soldiers killed hundreds of men, women, and children.
This sentencing comes after Sosa was found guilty of omitting his role in the Guatemalan army on his US citizenship application. Canadian authorities first arrested him in 2011, after he had fled the United States.
