Bolivia: 70 Narco-Flight Airstips Along Peruvian Border

According to Bolivia’s deputy minister of social defense, Felipe Cáceres, there are about 70 narco-flight airstrips hidden along the Peru-Bolivia border. Bolivian authorities argue that their country is a route for trafficking cocaine paste base and large amounts of marijuana.

“It’s difficult to get the exact number of clandestine airstrips in Bolivia and on the other side of Peru, but we have an assessment, we’re talking about at least 70 clandestine airstrips,” said Cáceres in a statement to the press. Cáceres cited the lack of technology to detect illegal air transportation as being a weakness in the war on drugs. The government budgeted US$56 million dollars to administer the continued fight against drugs.
