Juan Manuel Santos, president of Colombia, landed in Miami, Florida, today and will spend three days in the United States. Santos arranged to meet with President Barrack Obama on Tuesday to discuss continuing relations between the two countries. Santos seeks to reaffirm Kennedy’s Alliance for Progress, a 1961 effort aimed to establish economic cooperation between the United States and Latin America.

“I will propose to the United States and President Obama, just as 50 years ago when President Kennedy went to Colombia to propose the Alliance for Progress, I think now that we’re a half-century later, we have made progress but we can revive an alliance of this type, an alliance for progress and peace,” said Santos.
