Honduras: First Official, Partial Results Give Win to Hernández
EspañolAccording to the first report this evening from Honduras’s Tribunal Supremo Electoral, Juan Orlando Hernández, the Partido Nacional candidate, has a strong lead with 35 percent of counted votes. Xiomara Castro, candidate for Partido Libertad y Refundación (LIBRE) and wife of former president Manuel Zelaya, follows Hernández with just over 28 percent.
Despite only 24 percent of votes counted, Hernández and his party have declared themselves the victors. Beyond the presidential results, however, people await results for the new parliament, which is being reformed in its entirety.
While authorities declared the procession of the election without particular incidents undermining them, a court order kept polling booths open for an additional hour, since too many people were still waiting to vote.
