Cuban Migrants Seen Sailing around the Cayman Islands
The Cayman News Service reported Saturday that a Cuban vessel carrying thirteen men and two women had been seen anchored off the shore of Bodden Town, Grand Cayman. An additional 32 migrants arrived at the islands the previous night and were treated for seasickness. However, authorities did not permit the boat to move on.
While Cayman authorities allow boats considered safe to sail through, a 1999 agreement with the Cuban government requires that they refrain from providing assistance with food, water, or boat repairs. Those not wanting to continue their journey or traveling on dangerous boats are detained and repatriated to Cuba.
