California Industrial Hemp Farming Act Is Officially Law

By: PanAm Post Staff - Oct 1, 2013, 11:28 am

California Governor, Jerry Brown, has signed the California Industrial Hemp Farming Act (SB 566) into law after it passed with bipartisan support through the California legislature. The director of Vote Hemp, Patrick Goggin, said that “Before farmers can begin planting hemp under SB 566, the state will need to seek clarification from federal officials that state regulations for hemp farming meet the requirements outlined in the recent memo issued by Deputy Attorney General James Cole.”

At the federal level, hemp is illegal to grow but not to import, so currently California spends millions of dollars on imported hemp to produce everyday products manufactured within the state. Given its wide array of uses, hemp production within California is likely to open up new economic activity, from the farming sector to the soap industry.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and the county agricultural commissioners will enforce the law and regulate hemp production.
