Vice President Joe Biden Visits Mexico to Discuss Economic Relationship

By: PanAm Post Staff - Sep 23, 2013, 8:48 pm

This past Friday, while in the Mexican capital, Vice President Joe Biden met with top government officials and business leaders. However, instead of security issues, like the drug war and the recent news about the NSA spying on Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto, this meeting focused on the economic relationship between the United States and Mexico.

There is a plan to initiate a yearly “high level economic dialogue” between Mexican and US officials. Thus, Biden spoke of the positive effect of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), stating that it had quadrupled the rate of exchange between the United States and Mexico since 1994. In addition, Biden encouraged Mexico to improve its justice system and strengthen intellectual property rights.

Mexican President Peña Nieto stated that the relationship between the two countries should not be limited to a few issues. Rather, it should draw on the talent and potential on offer — the “creativity and the initiative of the governments and their individuals.”
