EspañolA Mexican immigrant reportedly took his life this week at an immigration checkpoint between the US and Mexico after being deported by authorities for the third time.

Guadalupe Olivas, 45, of Sinaloa, was arrested by immigration authorities Monday, February 20 on the San Ysidro highway in California before being deported the following day.

He reportedly received a routine interview at a checkpoint in Tijuana before being told of the “We Are Mexican” program. He accepted food and a telephone call, according to an official report.

According to Federal Delegate from the National Immigration Institute Rodulfo Figueroa Pacheco, Olivas spoke to someone on the phone about meeting later in the day.

Olivas reportedly did not show abnormal behavior, according to details provided by Mexican authorities who met him on Mexican territory. Figueroa said there are 60,000 repatriation cases just like Olivas’.

“He said he was fine, that he did not need more support,”Figueroa said. “He was going to walk to meet up with his friends.”

No information has been obtained about the state of Olivas’ mental health.

About an hour after Olivas left the immigration checkpoint, Tijuana authorities received a notice about an incident that turned out to be Olivas’ suicide.

In 2016, 219,596 Mexicans were deported, and 20,996 people have been repatriated, 6,896 of them by Baja California state officials, according to the National Institute of Migration,
