EspañolThough the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has been a main issue for US President-elect Donald Trump, it appears that his intention is not to “tear it apart” as he indicated on various occasions throughout the campaign, but rather to “adjust” it according to the needs of the country, a top advisor on his transition team said.

“I don’t think we are looking to tear it apart,” said Anthony Scaramucci during a meeting with investors organized by the bipartisan group, No Labels. “Rather, we want to adjust it to the right measure and make it fairer.”

Donald Trump campaigned largely on his criticisms of NAFTA as well as other trade agreements, and had aggressive plan for addressing illegal immigration that included constructing a wall on the border between the US and Mexico.

In Mexico, there currently exists a deep concern for what Trump’s policy decisions will have on the economy and immigration. However, Scaramucci assured business owners that the United States has a “great relationship” with President Peña Nieto, saying they speak with him on a regular basis.

The Republic advisor said the intention of both Trump ad Nieto is to resume dialogue, and even see each other before Trump takes office, though no date for such a meeting has been set.
