EspañolMexico’s leading candidate for President is Margarita Zavala.

A poll conducted recently by Buedía & Laredo in conjunction with the newspaper El Universal show former President Felipe Calderón’s wife at the top with 42 percent — an increase of nine points from the previous poll.

Following Zavala was PRI candidate Miguel Angel Osorio Chong and Governor of Mexico City Miguel Angel Mancera. They look to be the main political candidates running against Zavala in 2018.

As for independent candidates, Jorge Castañeda was reportedly a preference over Jaime Rodríguez Calderón, Governor of the state of Nueva León.

The survey was titled “Electoral Overview 2018 Scenarios.” The 1,500 citizens who were interviewed between October 28 and November 1 were asked to say the first name they had in mind when they thought of candidates for 2018.

As for internal contests within political parties, Margarita Zavala was followed by PAN National President Ricardo Anaya with 21 percent of mentions —a three-point increase from the zero he had last time.

According to the results, if today were the presidential election, Margarita Zavala would be victorious with 30 percent followed by Andrés Manuel López Obrador with 25 percent. In third place would be Miguel Angel Mancera with 5 percent and Jaime Rodríguez Calderón obtaining 5 percent.
