Vizcarra, who until today was first vice president and Peruvian ambassador in Canada, received the presidential band and swore to the position, which he must exercise until July 28, 2021, before the president of Congress, the Fujimorist Luis Galarreta.

The new Peruvian president entered the Congress Chamber accompanied by the second vice president, Mercedes Aráoz, and was received with applause from all the parliamentary groups, which have offered to support the country’s governance.

Vizcarra, who this Thursday turned 55 years old, received shortly before the “Great Necklace” of the Order “The Sun of Peru” and the Order of “Merit for Distinguished Services” in the grade of “Grand Special Cross”, as reported the Peruvian Presidency.

The award was granted by Foreign Minister Cayetana Aljovín, for the work he did as Peruvian ambassador to Canada, a position he held until Thursday when he had to return to the country to take over the government after Kuczynski resigned, which was accepted by the full Congress.

Kuczynski resigned under pressure from Congress, faced with the evidence, in video and audio, of the attempts of his political allies, and at least one official and one minister, to buy the vote of an opposition legislator to prevent his removal from office because of his ties to the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.
